Trapshooting was originally developed by bird hunters looking to improve their capacity on the hunt, but the activity was fast to catch on with other interested shotgun enthusiasts.

The clay targets are launched from a “house”, via a clay target thrower, which launches a moving clay target at various  distances and angles away from the shooter, depending on the shooters position.

The shooter will shoot at the target after calling “pull!” Regardless if the shooter shatters the target or merely clips a small corner, the target will be considered a “dead” bird. Shooters have the responsibility to keep their own score.

This makes trapshooting different from other forms of clay shooting practices. The gun of choice in trapshooting is usually a 12-gauge shotgun. But, shooters have expanded their skills to use a variety of hunting guns in the practice.

Trapshooting is an attractive sport for men and women alike. Age differences are not important as old and young alike can participate in this exciting event. Of course, a certain amount of strength and stamina are needed to shoot well for any extended amount of time. There are even mental benefits to the practice.

Participants will improve hand-eye coordination, self discipline and mental focus. It is very important that all participants understand fire-arm safety procedures and have a healthy respect for firearms.

When shooting trap, each shooter gets 5 shots from 5 different stations.  Each shooter takes 1 shot at a time.  When the last shooter completes his 5th (final) shot at a station, the shooters move to the next station.  In total, a shooter will shoot 25 shots (a box of shells) each round.

There is always a Range Officer on duty to ensure safety.  Novice shooters will be get individual supervision from a certified Range Officer when they first start to ensure they understand the process, the safety protocols as well as some helpful instruction to increase their success rate at breaking targets.

    Pricing:

    • 1 Punch Card (consisting of 10 rounds) = $80.00

    PRECISION RIFLE SPORTS

    (PRS)

.22 LR Precision Benchrest – KDFGC (short description)

A small-bore precision benchrest (rimfire) event at KDFGC is a seated, rested target discipline that emphasizes extreme accuracy and consistency with .22 Long Rifle rifles. Shooters fire from fixed benches using front/rear bags or rest systems and high- magnification optics to place tight, concentric groups on paper targets at the club’s approved rimfire distances. The match focuses on marksmanship, rifle setup, ammunition consistency, wind reading, and careful, repeatable firing positions.

    Typical equipment and setup

    • ·       Rifle: bolt action or single shot  .22LR built for accuracy (heavy/varmint barrels common).
    • ·       Rests: front bag/rest and rear bag or full rest system (bench rest).
    • ·       Optics: medium to high magnification scopes for precise aiming.
    • ·       Ammunition: match grade .22LR (consistency is everything).
    • ·       Bench: shooters sit at fixed location benches on the range; KDFGC provides dedicated benchrest tables for this discipline.

    Course of fire (common formats)

KDFGC’s programming and events calendar supports organized target sports on club ranges; typical rimfire benchrest formats you're likely to see include:

    • ·       Multiple precision strings (for example: 1-3, 25 shot slow-fire strings with sighters).
    • ·       Group size matches where each competitor fires a defined number of record shots and the smallest average group (measured center- to-center) wins.

(Exact KDFGC match format will follow the group or string rules set by the match director - check the club events calendar or match flyer for the specific days course of fire).

    Scoring and targets

    • ·       2 common scoring approaches: group-size (measured in millimeters/inches) or point scoring on target rings.
    • ·        Rimfire benchrest historically favours smallest average group as the championship metric; matches usually require sighters followed by record strings. (Match director will state which method is used).

    Safety and club requirements

    • ·       All shooters must follow KDFGC range rules (point firearms downrange, verify chambers, follow the club’s safety procedures). Guests must be supervised, and members must complete required orientation/qualification before unsupervised range use. New members must attend range orientation and present a PAL to shoot firearms. There is then an additional PRS orientation, to shoot unsupervised at Bay #14 (PRS).

    Where and when

    • ·       PRS shoots as a group every Saturday morning at 9:00 during the summer season and 10:00 for the winter, at Bay #14, lower range.

    Who runs it / affiliation

    • ·       PRS is run by the members of KDFGC and is not yet affiliated with a particular national group.

Quick checklist for a new competitor

    • ·       Attend the KDFGC range orientation and then the specific PRS discipline qualification.
    • ·       Bring valid PAL and membership (or be a guest with a sponsoring member)
    • ·       Use safe bench rest gear (front /rear rests, eye/ ear protection) and bring match ammo.
    • ·       Arrive early for equipment setup, sighters, and range officer brief.

The KDFGC 1500 Discipline (Handgun / Holster – Target Shooting Sport)  holds its practices twice weekly on the Outdoor 1500 Range (also known as the UIT Range).   Usually on Wednesday & Sunday, but occasionally subject to change.   Please check with the Group Leader noted below.

The 4 th Sunday of each month we hold a 1500 Sanctioned Tournament, so practice is pre-empted on these Sundays.

A brief description on 1500 PPC shooting can be found on the KDFGC Website - under the “Clubs” Tab – scroll down to KDFGC 1500 (PPC).    KDFGC members are welcome to come out at any time to watch our practice sessions (or Tournaments) to get a better understanding of the sport.

1500 practice sessions are conducted using its formal 1500 competition calibres  (the most common being .38 Spl  &  9 mm).  Members can also participate in practices using .22 cal.   Other than the revolver or semi-auto pistol, one requires an appropriate holster, belt, magazines or speed loaders and their belt pouches.   On a practice session we normally fire around  100 – 120 rounds of ammunition.

To participate in the organized practice sessions club members must have completed the KDFGC Handgun Level 1 and 2 Courses, or equivalent, or had other professional holster training  (Law Enforcement, Military, Etc) – along with an evaluation by the Discipline Range Officers.

The only cost to participate is for the targets used (supplied by our Discipline).   To pay for the targets, you can use a  1500 target punch card, available in the office for $20.00 (for 10 punches)  or via the KDFGC Online Store.  You can also pay by cash,  a $3.00 fee (exact change please).

For further information contact the KDFGC 1500 Coordinator,  Dennis Krause at:   dennis_krause@telus.net
